Farewell, Mrs. O'Connor

I was quite surprised today when I saw the newscast. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor has stepped down from Supreme Court. No, I don't pay close attention to politics, so I hadn't heard there were rumors (which I learn on NPR while driving home.) I guess most people didn't believe the rumors, so at least I'm not the only one who is clueless.

I remember when Justice O'Connor was appointed. It was such a huge win for Women. I was still a small fry in High School. But even I could feel the importance of the move. I was so proud! I can honestly say, hers is the only name I know on the bench.

I'm a little sad that she has stepped down. She seems so much in the prime of her life. She's only 75! She's already beat breast cancer. (Again, thank NPR.) Why retire now? Unfortunately, here we see the nature of women and men. Cheif Justice Requist has cancer himself (I learned on the news). Have we heard of his retirement? No. He just keeps going, because he has the support to do it. Justice O'Connor is retiring (so the story goes) in order to take care of her husband, who is apparently in poor health. She needs to be selfless, and take care of others. I know it's simplistic.... but it's what struck me. Women have been doing it for thousands of years. Nature vs. Nurture. Nature almost always wins out.

I also find it interesting that West Wing is so on top of major stories! They ran a scenario several seasons ago (when it was still whitty and well written) placing 2 justices on the bench. That Sorkin is on top of his game!

Of course, the big question now will be, who will replace her? And knowing this government it will be a Conservative. Being Moderate to Liberal - Yikes!!!
